What are you afraid of and what is the big deal about fear? I would venture to say it is the “unknown” we most fear. If we are to truly address our fears, we must address the unknows that cause our fears with a greater Known. Let’s build a fear-fighting weapon in which our mind’s knowns are greater than our mind’s unknowns according to the truth in Psalm 46.

We find in Psalm 46 that God’s knowns are greater than our unknowns. So what is known about God?  Let’s look at just a few of the things the Psalmist knew about God.

1. God is our strong refuge. (Like the walls of Fort Knox.)

2. He is truly our helper in times of trouble. (Faster than the speed of Light)

3. He is a strong or secure refuge or place of safety. (Safer and more secure than Svalbard or Norad.) So God is not just a refuge, He is a STRONG refuge. Scripture is full with God’s strength and his refuge or sheltering.

So, despite some of the most frightening events known to man including mountains swallowed by the sea, earth changes, mountains tumbling and crashing, waves crashing and foaming, the Psalmist says He will not fear.

Let’s look at the formula this way.

Known < Unknown = Fear

Known > Unknown = NO Fear

SRg=God is a Strong Refuge

VPHg=God is a Very Present Help

Known = (SRg + VPHg )> Unknown = No Fear

It is clear that God is our Protector. And what a mighty protector He is who can overcome all the disasters noted in this Psalm. There are a great many unknowns in this life that may lie ahead but why do we fear when we have a STRONG refuge who is ever present?  Let your KNOWN (God) or what you know about God and His very capable, protective care over you be greater > than any unknown that you fear. Otherwise if your unknown is greater > than your Known, you will fear. God asks us to be still and KNOW that He is God and therein lies no fear.
